A medal celebrating Port San Antonio’s 2010 Fiesta de los Niños has won the San Antonio Fiesta Commission’s top design honor.
The event, originally scheduled for April 17, has moved to this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at Port San Antonio.
The medal is based on a drawing by fourth-grader Juliette Ponce of Athens Elementary. In January, Ms. Ponce won a design contest Port San Antonio sponsored among several elementary schools to create a medal for Fiesta de los Niños, the annual Fiesta event for children and their families held at the Port.
Yesterday, the Fiesta Commission selected Ms. Ponce’s design the winner from among approximately 50 medals created for various Fiesta-related events in San Antonio this year.
The design features an acoustic guitar adorned with butterflies. In the background appears a ribbon announcing “Fiesta de los Niños” alongside a star-shaped piñata and San Antonio’s Tower of the Americas. The Port’s Web marketing manager, Philip Williamson, composed the design based on Ms. Ponce’s drawing.
Port San Antonio produced 500 medals, which are available at the Fiesta Store at 2611 Broadway.
This year will mark the fourth time that Port San Antonio is sponsoring Fiesta de los Niños. The event offers a day full of family-friendly activities in an alcohol-free environment.
The 2010 Fiesta de los Niños celebrations will take place at 200 Goodrich Drive at Port San Antonio on April 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature two stages with live entertainment along with rides, games and food for children and adults to enjoy together. Admission and parking are free.
