The theme for this year's Parade is The Magic of Make Believe! A sense of wonderment will take a child's dreams and turn them into magic for them, their families and the inner child in all of us. This 123-year- old parade is sure to inspire the dreams of both young and old. While the Civic/Education and Commercial Floats depict the magic of rhyming words with nursery rhymes, the Antique Cars, Amusements, Carriages and Wagons chose themes from the magic of storytelling through children's books. The Cavalcade portrays the magic of the western frontier; the Military features the magic of the heroes of our country and the Commercial Balloons will be magic in the skies. The Aggie Band will once again lead the parade with their magnificent sound and precision marching. The military is honored with the Vanguard Units from area high schools who march the parade route prior to the parade. The Parade also features nine public schools who are invited on a rotating schedule to ride on a float provided by the Battle of Flowers®. Parade participants are asked to bring a floral tribute to be placed by the San Antonio Academy Cadets on the lawn in front of the Alamo.
In early 1891, Mrs. James Slayden, the wife of a congressman, began a campaign suggesting that a “Flower Parade” be staged based on a parade she had observed while in Spain. Wanting to honor the fallen heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, Mrs. Slayden concluded that April 21 would be the best date for the parade. Today, the Battle of Flowers® Parade holds the distinction of being the first celebration held in Alamo Plaza and is considered the founding event of Fiesta® San Antonio.
