3 Local Nonprofits Join Fiesta 2008

SAN ANTONIO, TX November 29, 2007 - The Fiesta San Antonio Commission has added three local nonprofit organizations to its membership. They will be sponsoring three new official events in April. The new participating member organizations and their events are:

  • Port San Antonio, 143 Billy Mitchell Blvd. It will sponsor Fiesta de los Niños April 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds of the former Kelly AFB. A children’s parade will kick off the festivities. The event includes children’s rides and games, food booths, and live music. The sponsors say that the event will “reach out to a broader segment of Southside families who will benefit by having a quality, child-focused, low cost activity close by.
  • St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 502 East Nueva. It will sponsor Fiesta Nueva April 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event features a Mariachi Service, live music, children’s games and rides and the crowning of “King Gallo.” Proceeds are to benefit St. John’s ministry and school. Sculptors Dominion International Inc. Its event is the Sculptors Dominion Exhibit April 19, 20, 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Villa del Carmen, 11354 Vance Jackson Rd. About 70 sculptors will showcase their work on a six-acre landscaped area. The organization works to expose the community to the culture of sculpturing.
  • Sculptors Dominion International, Inc., 11354 Vance Jackson. SDI will sponsor an International Sculptors Invitational April 19, 20, 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Villa del Carmen Conservatory. The exhibit features 120 big outdoor sculptures by professional sculptors on six landscaped sculpture garden acres. Self tour about 45 minutes. $20. Nationally there are only a few sculpture gardens of similar offering that match the quantity and variety of the Sculptors Invitational.
Nonprofit organizations apply during the summer to become Fiesta Commission members. They must show proof of their nonprofit status, and the event must have taken place for two years before they apply. A committee evaluates the applications in October, and the Board of Commissioners makes its final decision that month.

“Fiesta never ends because these organizations and the Fiesta Commission’s 97 other nonprofit groups give back to their neighbors throughout the year,” said Executive Director Chuck Blische.

Fiesta San Antonio 2008 will run April 18 through 27 with more than 100 events around the city and beyond.
